If you are nervous about seeing a dentist, you are not alone! Many people feel anxious about dental treatment. Dental anxiety and a dread of the dentist is a serious problem for some patients and here at Lynn Road we address this problem with due care, from the moment you book an appointment to the completion of your treatment. People of all ages and backgrounds are affected by dental anxiety. They needlessly worry about, postpone, or avoid seeing the dentist and the only thing that forces them to do so is extreme pain. Being nervous about going to the dentist affects people in different ways - You may be anxious about specific aspects of the dental treatment.
- You had an unpleasant experience as a child.
- You may dislike being in close contact with someone you do not know very well.
There are also different levels of dental anxiety, ranging from slight nervousness to phobic. (When someone has an intense fear that may lead to panic attacks). When you come to see us It is important for you to inform us about your anxieties when you are booking an appointment, so we can find a way of dealing with your problem one step at a time. - If possible, try to arrange your appointment first thing in the morning this way you will not have to wait in reception or worry about the prospect of the appointment all morning.
- It may also help to bring a reassuring friend or family member with you.
We can arrange to make your examination a little longer, giving you the opportunity to talk about your anxieties to the dentist and the nurse. Also, if you have any questions your dentist will be able to answer them. Dentistry has advanced a great deal in recent years and there is many methods of controlling and relieving pain, what is right for you can be discussed with you dentist.
