What is a Dental Emergency?

A Dental Emergency is a type of medical emergency involving the teeth or gingiva (gums). Pain involving these parts of the mouth, even when minor, can indicate a severe underlying problem that could worsen with time.

 

It is important to contact a dentist as soon as possible for a professional evaluation to minimize damage to the teeth, gums and the supporting bone. Short-term action can be taken to relieve oral pain, which can be severe.

Remember that symptoms may vary person to person.  

 

Examples of primary emergency cases are:

Bleeding that will not stop, Swelling of the face, cheeks or gums. Severe pain, Swelling of the neck, Broken tooth or teeth causing pain, or a Fractured jaw.

 

Examples of non-emergency cases are:

Although the following may be often thought of as an emergency, they do not require urgent dental assistance. However, in these circumstances a member of our team will endeavor to fit you in for a priority appointment with your dentist. If you  are in any doubt do not hessitate to contact us or contact the out of hours emergency number.

 

Broken/cracked tooth (no pain), lost or broken filling (no pain), loose or lost crown, broken denture, slight sensitivity, sore gum or broken bridge.

 

What can i do to be Prepared?

- Have your dentists telephone number

- Have the out of hours number

- Have a handkerchief - to stop bleeding

- Have gauze - as above

- Paracetamol or Ibuprofen -  (not Asprin. Asprin is an anti-coagulant, which may cause excessive bleeding in a dental emergency).
