Our dental hygienists are clinicians concerned with prevention. They have undertaken full-time education at chosen dental schools to obtain the Certificate of Dental Hygiene. Sarah Gauvin qualified in 1991 whilst serving in the womens Royal Navy, Debbie Quinn qualified in the Army and Natalie McCann qualified in the RAF. Caroline Mason has just recently joined our team too. A visit with the Dental Hygienist A visit may take place only following a referral from the dentist. The appointment format may vary but will usually entail (in order of importance): 1. A thorough gum examination and evaluation, so that gum problems (gingival and periodontal) can be detected in their earliest stages. Sometimes problems can be present without the person being aware of them. 2. Explanation and advice when necessary regarding tooth decay (dental caries) and gum problems in order to arrest or correct them ie. correct brush and brushing technique, the use of floss or other related products to clean between the teeth. 3. Scaling to remove plaque, the white sticky material that causes gum problems and decay and calculus (tartar), the hardened plaque that can cuase serious gum problems which left untreated can lead to tooth loss. 4. Treatment of Halitosis, identifying the cause and providing the necessary advice and treatment for fresh breath. 5. Polishing, a cosmetic procedure to remove staines i.e. tea / coffee, red wine or tobacco staines for a natural white smile.
